Apple iOS 11.0.1 Release: Should You Upgrade?

Apple iOS 11.0.1 Release: Should You Upgrade?

Apple iOS 11 has problems and, as I warned in my iOS 11 Upgrade Guide, you were wise to give it a wide berth – despite all its tempting secret features. The good news is Apple has recognised these flaws and rushed iOS 11.0.1 out the door just one week later. But should you upgrade or is it a case of out the frying pan and into the fire?

Here’s everything you need to know…

Apple

Apple iOS 11.0.1 is here and it brings both fixes and problems

Who Is iOS 11.0.1 For?

As will all iOS 11.x updates, iOS 11.0.1 is compatible with the iPhone 5S or later, iPad mini 2 or later and the 6th generation iPod touch or later. Yes that means there’s no redemption for the three models cut loose with the end of iOS 10.

Compatible devices should be automatically notified to upgrade to iOS 11.0.1, but you can also check manually by going to Settings > General > Software Update. Note: iOS 11.0.1 is not part of the beta program, so if you are then you will need to unroll your device for it to show up.

As always, the size of iOS 11.0.1 will vary depending on device but it is typically around 300GB.

The Deal Breakers

Once again I issue my regular warning to Jailbreakers. iOS 11.0.1 will break all current jailbroken iPhones, iPads and iPod touch, so if this is vital to you avoid iOS 11.0.1 until progress is made.

Just like iOS 11, iOS 11.0.1 seems to be causing several issues for upgraders. Users are wading in on social mediareddit and to Apple’s official Support Communities forum about various issues including ongoing poor battery life and performance, trouble with the Files app and crashes.

Apple iOS 11 battery decay is up to 60% worse than iOS 10

It’s important to separate initial concerns from much wider problems and I will update this guide should the problems reported escalate. But at this stage I would urge caution upgrading iOS 11.0.1, unless you are a victim of the issue detailed in the next section…

So What Do You Get?

Unlike the massive feature list of iOS 11, Apple simply gives iOS 11.0.1 the generic description it attributes to many smaller releases. That iOS 11.0.1 “includes bug fixes and improvements for your iPhone or iPad.”

But dig a little deeper and you will find an important fix Apple (for some reason) declined to mention in the update itself. This can be found on an Apple support page where it confirms iOS 11.0.1 fixes the problem iOS 11 created where it broke synchronisation of Exchange accounts with Apple Mail, rendering millions of email accounts useless unless you reverted to a third party app.

Users have also found iOS 11.0.1 has performance improvements for the iMessage App Explorer and Springboard while Camera and Photos have had bug fixes to work better on older phones. There are also reports it addresses some bugs with Apple CarPlay introduced in iOS 11.

Apple iOS 11.0.1 Verdict: Stay Away (With One Exception)

Right now there are far too many users reporting issues with iOS 11.0.1 to recommend you install it to your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. The exception to that rule is if you are already affected by the Exchange bug since it’s worth the risk to get your email back.

Another group who may deem they have nothing to lose is those suffering from the severe battery degradation iOS 11 caused for (primarily) iPhone users.

If you aren’t one of those groups and iOS 11 or even an earlier version iOS 10 is working perfectly for you, then I would suggest you stay away. And this is why…

The Road Ahead

Apple has not only launched iOS 11.0.1 today, but it has also seeded the first beta of iOS 11.1. As the name suggests, iOS 11.1 will be a much bigger update which is expected to bring more fixes, new features and lay the ground for the launch of the much anticipated iPhone X.
