Apple is working with LG Display on a foldable iPhone signalling another major shift in the iPhone design following the launch of the near bezel-less iPhone X.
Reports say that LG Display already has a team in place working on a foldable OLED panels for the Cupertino giant, and we could see the first foldable iPhone some time in 2020.

According to The Investor, which sources The Bell, apart from LG Display’s team that is working on foldable OLED panels the new iPhone, parts-making sister firm LG Innotek has also set up a team that is assigned to develop rigid flexible printed circuit board, or RFPCB. The panel production will reportedly start in 2020, which is when you can expect to see Apple’s foldable iPhone.
It is interesting to see Apple go with LG Display seeing as how Samsung has been the OLED supplier for the iPhone X. Samsung is expected to continue supplying OLED panels to Apple for next year’s iPhone as well. LG Display has been supplying LCD panels to Apple for a long time now, and this move will likely strengthen their partnership even further.
LG’s own foldable OLED panel prototype has been around for a couple of years now and the company has reportedly been upgrading the durability and the yield rate.
The report further adds that LG has begun its first OLED production for phones at its E5 plant in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province.
The first batch of OLED panels from here will be shipped to LG Electronics and some Chinese handset makers, the report says. Production for the iPhone is expected to begin by 2019 at a yet-to-be-opened plant, called E6, in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, which Apple is reportedly investing in to speed up OLED production.
